HOW WE GOT ON
Midwest Premiere

directed by JOSH SOBEL
Citadel Theatre
Fall 2013
Citadel Theatre Company brings in the beat with the Midwest premiere of acclaimed spoken word poet and playwright Idris Goodwin's new hip-hop drama. Set in 1988, How We Got On mixes the true history of hip-hop with a coming-of-age tale about a trio of suburban Midwestern kids discovering rap as a means to escape their cultural, family and other issues, all played out with a live onstage emcee.

HONORABLE MENTION: Best of the Fringe 2013, Chicago Tribune
"RECOMMENDED... Both fittingly and surprisingly, this show gets its local premiere with Lake Forest's Citadel Theatre under Josh Sobel's sure-handed direction... The young cast... nail the restlessness and rivalry underlying their desire to make a mark with the microphone and break away from the usual teenage track. And Sobel keeps the overlapping musical segments in tight focus... even those deficient in rap lore will find much to root for in Goodwin's smart and warmhearted story of kids who find freedom in free-styling."
-Chicago Tribune
"RECOMMENDED... This play with music is a risk and a big departure from Citadel Theatre's typical fare… the opening night audience, composed of parents, grandparents and young teenagers, all sounded impressed both by this talented ensemble of young actors, as well as by the intelligent, engaging rap music they performed. The play's appeal as an age-old tale of antagonism turned into amiability can't be beat.”
